If you're a Gen Xer or Millennial, there's a good chance you grew up reading the YA novels of Christopher Pike. His horror and thriller titles, like Slumber Party (1985), Witch (1990), and The Visitor (1995), amongst many others, were books that transitioned generations of young readers into the more adult worlds of Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Anne Rice.

Before even reading the description I knew this had to be a psychological thriller. A piece of fabric, possibly a dress, left behind on an abandoned beach. The first thing that enticed me was the cover art. This was one of the first novels I had discovered on NetGalley, so I was overjoyed to see I was approved to review. Determined to get to the bottom, Marissa embarks on an investigation of her own, but she may not be happy with what she finds. Shocked, Marissa cannot stop thinking about what happened to Lindsey. The next day, Marissa finds Lindsey’s lifeless body on the beach. So when Lindsey asks for an olive branch, Marissa decides to extend Lindsey an invite to her engagement party. Now, Lindsey lives next door to the man of Marissa’s dreams. In college, her childhood best friend and roommate, Lindsey, betrayed her more then she could possibly know. Marissa Parlette never had it easy when it came to relationships. All opinions mentioned in this review are my own. In Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs (Little, Brown), Mann reflects on her life and work with the same unflinching vitality. Whatever her subject, Mann’s work is both lyrical and unsettling, evoking universal human themes of innocence, eroticism, and mortality. Her subjects-captured in arrestingly candid, luminous black-and-white images-have included her own young children, facing down the slings and arrows of childhood in Immediate Family (1992) the beloved Shenandoah Valley landscapes of her youth, revisited with an adult understanding of historical wounds in Deep South (2005) and her once strong-bodied husband of more than four decades, Larry, ravaged by muscular dystrophy in Proud Flesh (2009). Sally Mann has spent her career examining those things closest to her.
